Driver's Licence

For driving cars in the Cook Islands you must have a current full overseas licence. Your overseas licence, must be in English or a certified English translation is required as well.

Getting Around Rarotonga

On Rarotonga we drive on the left side of the road. The road rules here are similar to Australia and New Zealand.

The coastal road (Ara Tapu) is the main road that circles Rarotonga. There is also a second inland road (Ara Metua) that travels inland but does not circle the entire island there is also no road that travels through the centre of the island.

As beautiful as Rarotonga is, driving can be a little hazardous, you should keep a watchful eye on the road. The islands animal population, especially dogs and chickens can dart out in front of you without warning. Coconut trees and other trees lining the road can be another hazard to watch out for especially during strong wind gusts.

Rarotonga has very few footpaths for pedestrians to use, so please be wary when passing by them.

Rarotonga has set speed zones, 50km/ph throughout the island with 30km/ph in Avarua, Muri and 20km/ph through school zones. 

Remember when you’re on holiday take it slow or think island time.

What is included in the rate?

Unlimited kilometres, government tax (V.A.T. 15%), and standard Insurance.

What currency do you accept?

We accept payment in New Zealand Dollars only.

Do I have to pay a bond when renting a vehicle with Avis?

All rentals are subject to a deposit at the time of vehicle collection to cover miscellaneous/optional charges, the amount deductible will be the applicable insurance excess and a $100 fuel bond.  Deposits can be made by credit card.

               The amount of deposit may be debited to the card at rental collection; or an authority is taken until the conclusion of rental

               when the applicable deposited amount may be debited.


               DEBIT CARD
               Visa or MasterCard Debit Cards must be bank issued and will be subjected to additional checks.  If approved, the card will be

               debited as per the above Credit Card policy.

What method of payment do you accept?

Payments can be made in cash, Visa & MasterCard.  We do not accept American Express.

Is insurance included in the rate?

Yes, standard insurance is included in the rental rate with an excess of $2000 regardless of who is at fault. This includes Third Party Liability and Collision Damage Waiver. You may wish to purchase the Excess reduction for $10 per day, this reduces your excess of $2000 to $500.

Can I pay for my booking on arrival?

To take advantage of special offers, customers are required to prepay in advance to secure the booking.

How old do I have to be if I wanted to rent a car?

The minimum age to hire a vehicle with us is 18 years.

Do I need a Cook Islands Licence?

No, you are able to drive on your current overseas licence. However, it must be valid for the class of vehicle hired, it also must be a FULL licence and be in English or a Certified English translation must accompany the licence.

What is a full drivers licence?

A full driver’s licence is a licence that allows you to drive without restriction or special conditions in your home country.

Do we have to pay for additional drivers?

Yes, the main renter is permitted 1 additional driver free of charge. Any additional driver after that is charged at $2 per additional driver per day.

Can I rent a car for only a few hours?

Unfortunately there is a minimum hire period of 2 days for GROUPS A, B, C, D, E, F, G, K & S. We also have a 3 day minimum hire period for GROUP V.

Minimum hire periods are enforced during peak periods. For more information on minimum hire periods please contact us.

What happens if I return my car a few hours late?

Extra hours on your rental are calculated at 1/5 of the daily rate up until the 5th hour when a full day rate will apply.

What happens with fuel?

The vehicle is rented with a full tank and you must return the vehicle with a full tank of fuel. A refilling fee of $20.00 is charged along with the applicable fuel costs for a vehicle returned with less fuel than when hired.

Do you hire child seats?

Child seats are not compulsory in the Cook Islands however we have them available for hire. Reservations are essential.

I’m arriving on an early morning flight will the airport office be open?

Our office is only open for International Flights from 8am - 7pm daily.  Our office is located in the arrival terminal to the right of the arrival doors. Check with the usher they should be able to point you in the right direction.


How will I know if I book online that you have received my booking?

You will receive a booking confirmation once we have successfully processed the required prepayment to secure your reservation.

Please note that during peak periods processing time can be longer than our standard turnaround time of 24 hours.

What do I need to pick up my booking?

You will need a copy of your reservation confirmation, a valid FULL drivers licence and a valid imprintable credit card.

Is there a breakdown service?

Yes, our roadside assistance is available from 8am to 7pm ,7 days a week even on public holidays.
